Helping organisations tell stories that matter — through strategy, comms and creativity

My Journey

I’m a strategic communications consultant, former journalist, and bestselling author of 30+ books with over three decades of experience in the media industry.

I’ve worked across press, publishing, and public relations — giving me a deep understanding of how to communicate complex ideas in a way that cuts through and connects. Whether I’m shaping stakeholder messaging, supporting a major launch, or crafting content for a funding bid, I bring insight, creativity and clarity to every project.

Who I Work With

Over the years I’ve delivered campaigns and consultancy for organisations across the heritage, cultural, legal, local government and healthcare sectors — from blue-chip brands to charities, arts organisations and city councils.

Projects have included:

High-stakes crisis communications
Strategic content for civic and commercial campaigns
Public engagement strategies aligned with funding bids and KPIs
Museum exhibitions and literary festivals

I’ve also worked extensively on National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England-supported initiatives — blending public engagement with evaluation and impact reporting.

As an author, my work exploring British cultural and social history has reached wide audiences. Many titles have become bestsellers, and some have been adapted into TV documentaries.

How I Work

My communications style is insight-led and outcomes-focused — drawing on research, strategic planning, and decades of real-world media experience.

I use frameworks like OASIS, KPI benchmarking, and audience insight tools to ensure every project is built on strong foundations and delivers long-term value.

Digital-first by default, I work across content strategy, media relations, stakeholder communications, social media, and campaign evaluation.

Alongside consultancy work, I also lecture in PR and strategic communications at Sheffield Hallam University — helping develop the next generation of communications professionals.
