A Full-Circle PR Moment: Celebrating 30 Years of Nonnas

Some PR projects last a few weeks.

The best relationships last decades.

Last Sunday, hundreds of people gathered at Nonnas on Ecclesall Road to celebrate one of Sheffield’s most successful independent hospitality businesses reaching its 30th anniversary.

For Neil Anderson, it was much more than another client event.

Thirty years earlier, one of his earliest private sector PR commissions had been helping launch Nonnas back in 1996. Returning three decades later to lead communications around its milestone anniversary made this a genuine full-circle moment.

Over the past couple of months, Neil Anderson Media developed and delivered a strategic communications campaign celebrating not just the restaurant, but the thousands of memories people have created there over three decades.

The campaign included:

  • Strategic PR planning and media relations
  • Feature writing and press releases
  • Photography and event coverage
  • Social media strategy and content creation
  • A public memories campaign encouraging customers to share their stories
  • Ongoing media liaison before, during and after the celebrations

The response exceeded expectations.

The memories campaign generated tens of thousands of online views, with hundreds of comments from customers recalling first dates, family celebrations, business meetings, football legends, lifelong friendships and unforgettable moments that all began at Nonnas.

Those stories became the heart of the campaign.

The celebrations themselves brought together hundreds of guests, including the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Andrew Sangar, the Lady Mayoress, former WBC Cruiserweight World Champion Johnny Nelson and many of the customers who first walked through Nonnas’ doors during its earliest years.

Thirty years ago, Neil was helping introduce Nonnas to Sheffield. On Sunday, he was helping celebrate everything it has become.

Seeing so many people reunited by one restaurant was a powerful reminder that the strongest brands aren’t built through advertising alone. They are built through consistency, relationships, trust and memories.

The event also provided the opportunity to spend time once again with Maurizio Mori, who has remained a close friend throughout those three decades, and to catch up with original co-owner Gian Bohen, whose vision helped establish one of Sheffield’s best-known independent restaurants.

The project perfectly reflects the philosophy behind Neil Anderson Media.

Great PR isn’t about generating publicity for publicity’s sake.

It’s about uncovering authentic stories, creating emotional connections and helping organisations build reputations that stand the test of time.

Thirty years after helping launch Nonnas, helping celebrate one of Sheffield’s most enduring success stories was a privilege.

If your organisation has a story worth telling, we’d love to help you tell it.
